Girls win opening tourney
Northampton head girls’ basketball coach Jeff Jacksits had a better feeling about his team after opening weekend than he previously did after their preseason scrimmages.
“They were good games, and really good scrimmages for us,” said Jacksits. “I wasn’t happy with our scrimmages, and we didn’t get tested.
“We were able to take control against Coatesville, and get everybody in the game. These games were more like our scrimmages and now we have a better feeling about what we have to work on moving forward.”
Northampton defeated Coatesville, 52-35, in the opening round of the Owen J. Roberts tournament, and they then defeated the host team, 53-47, to claim the title.
Grace Lesko was named the tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) for her dominant play, as she scored 23 and 19 points respectively. Taylor Kranzley also was named to the all-tournament team.
“Grace was pretty much unstoppable,” said Jacksits. “They tried to double-down on her. But she is such a great athlete and she even brought the ball up. She can handle the ball and shoot the three. When she had the ball, we got out of her way. She is very versatile.
“Taylor has two good days of floor play. She did a great job defensively on the other’s best player. Taylor did a great job directing the floor and setting people up for their shot.”
Jacksits also cited the play of starters Kyle Gilliard, Devyn Demchak, and Nicole Yellin, for their contributions.
He also complemented the play of Maddie Hurts off the bench.
“Devyn and Nicole did a nice job on the boards, and Kylie was solid for us,” said Jacksits. “They all played their roles.
“Maddie is a good athlete and she got some time when we had foul trouble against Owen J. Roberts. She was nervous and was all over the place when she came in, but she hit two big three-pointers for us in the fourth quarter against (Owen J. Roberts).”
