Girls see hardworking, 3-1 start

Catasauqua head girls’ basketball coach Mark Seremula believed his team’s 3-1 league record was the best it has been at this point of the season since former head coach Dave Troxell’s first successful run in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Troxell’s daughter, Delaney, is starting sophomore on the current team.

More importantly, though, these Roughies lately are looking more like Troxell’s Roughies.

The Roughies won their third consecutive game with a hard-fought, 40-34, victory at Southern Lehigh Monday night to raise their overall record to 3-3.

Sophomore Lailey Polanco led the Roughies with 15 points and sophomore Cora Soltis added 10.

The victory marked the third straight game in which Catty has tallied 40 or more points in a game. It has been a welcomed relief for a team that went winless last season.

“It’s great for the kids,” said fourth-year head coach Mark Seremula. “Our offense is getting better. We also can have one of the bigger front lines in the league.

“We have had two or three girls scoring in double figures. Southern Lehigh had lost their starting lineup, but they are a well-coached and disciplined team. We knew it would be a challenge for us, but these girls are getting more confident and playing well together.”

Seremula credited sophomore center Sophia Becker for her consistent play on the boards.

“She has been dominating the post,” said Seremula. “She has been averaging anywhere from nine to 10 or more rebounds per game. Her play has really made a difference for us.”

Polanco has been among the team’s leading scorers throughout the season, and Seremula hasn’t been surprised.

“She has been great for us out there,” he said. “She started some games as a freshman, and we expected her to have a good year.

“She played on an AAU team during the summer, and you can see how she has elevated her game.”

Seremula also has been pleased with the play of sophomore point guard Alivia Bear.

“She has been playing very good on the ball defense,” he said. “She also has been doing a great job running the offense in her first year.”

Troxell, who also is among the team’s leading scorers, sees plenty of positives ahead.

“So far our season is going pretty well,” said Troxell. “Even though we lost our first three games, we came together against Palisades and broke our 21-game losing streak.

“We are bonding really well with each other and playing as a team. We communicate on and off the court constantly. We are a very young team and will have key returning players back for next year.

“I’m extremely excited for the rest of the season and the next two years.”
