Boys off to slow start
These are trying’ times for the Catasauqua boys’ basketball team.
Head coach Eric Snyder, who is in his 30th year at the helm of the program, is seeking to piece together some cohesion and develop some chemistry with a small group of players who saw limited varsity time last season and motley junior varsity players from last year’s team that went winless.
After Monday night’s 61-24 loss to Southern Lehigh, the Rough Riders fell to 0-3 on the season. The Rough Riders have scored 30 or more points only once this season.
“We were down 36-9 at halftime to Salisbury,” said Snyder about his team’s recent 49-26 to the Falcons. “We have too many guys right now without enough experience.
“Along with the physical skills, there is an issue with commitment to other issues in their lives. We have to get them to understand what it takes and what they have to do to play a high school sport.”
Snyder stated junior point guard Bryann Rivera has been adjusting to his new position, but he needs to improve his shooting. Junior Cedric Bright, who did see varsity time last year, has been inconsistent.
Senior Donovan Keys has been slowed from knee surgery, and newcomer Irving Torres has had some flashes.
Seniors Manny and Jose Jiminez bring instant energy to the lineup, but both of them have battled with eligibility issues.
“They can make things happen,” said Snyder. “They are quick and can steal passes, and anticipate well. They are a plus for us when they are on the floor.”
Snyder also credited freshman Matt Fotta and junior Ian Juica for their consistent contributions.
“Fotta looks good,” added Snyder. “He has been doing good things for us in every game. He is playing with a lot of confidence, and he should get better.
“Juica knows the game and is getting better. He is very aggressive out there.”
The Roughies finished their week with home games against Northwestern Wednesday and Fleetwood Friday.
They will host Northampton Dec. 27 and then return to the floor to host Palmerton Jan. 4.
“We’ll see what happens,” said Snyder. “We need to continue to work to get better. We have to gain a basketball sense on the court.”
