Sweet tradition

Sheckler Elementary School Assistant Principal Ron DeMaio and Brad Evans, second-grade teacher, hosted a gingerbread house decorating event Dec. 14 with the students.

According to DeMaio, he and Evans used to decorate gingerbread houses annually with the students. The tradition started in 1995, when they were both second-grade teachers. When DeMaio moved to his assistant principal role, the tradition ended.

Since they are both retiring at the end of the school year, they thought it would be fun to bring it back one more time.

Students worked in groups of two or three to decorate the gingerbread houses with pretzel sticks, marshmallows, peppermints, licorice, Skittles and more. They even had three different kinds of icing to choose from.

The students tapped into their creative sides and even gave their creations fun names, such as The Candy Sweet and Gingerbread Estates. The finished products were put on display in the cafeteria for everyone to see.
