Theater Review: Cindy Lou in all her story at Civic

If you mix old-style burlesque with a classic children’s story, then you might get a tasty concoction that looks like “Who’s Holiday,!” through Dec. 19 at Civic Theatre of Allentown Theatre 514.

The Matthew Lombardo comedy as directed by Will Morris takes a humorous look at some human issues which are not funny at all.

Cindy Lou Who (Cheryl Moritz) of Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” fame has grown up and tells her story of love, rejection by family and friends, false allegations and subsequent jail time, and separation and alienation from her child.

Moritz’s one-woman performance is a tour de force. She is at once high-energy, bawdy and charming. The Dec. 10 opening night performance was seen for this review.

The grown-up Cindy Lou Who drinks too much, is a little vulgar and feels lonely and outcast. In other words, she is very relatable.

But she hasn’t forgotten her Whoville times; she still talks in rhymes:

“You remember me. I’m sure that you do.

When I was a youngster, I was Cindy Lou Who.”

Her affair with Grinch, however, was regrettable, as she tells it:

“How was I to know he was evil or crass?”

She describes Grinch’s main attribute as she holds her cigarette holder to her lush lips. Kudos to Prop Master Jason Sizemore for the visual aide.

Her parents didn’t see the charm, but only saw a mixed-race relationship and an illegitimate green, fuzzy baby girl.

Rejection by her mom and dad was followed by her Whoville friend’s condemnation.

Again, pretty relatable stuff.

While serving time in a women’s prison for Grinch’s murder (Of course, she says she is innocent.), she grows up, finds true love, but still she is glad to be sprung from the big house:

“Bursting with glee

I had made my parole

And they were setting me free!”

The production has high-caliber sets, costumes, lighting and sound. Scenic Designer Sam Roff, Technical Director Alex Sharkey and Scenic Artist Jan Joyce team to deliver a beautiful and believable set situated in the cold, snowy mountains, probably not far from Whoville.

Cindy Lou’s beautiful blonde hair is courtesy of Hair and Wig Designer Kim Danish.

Special recognition to Costume and Lighting Designer Paul Halada and to Sound Designer Randall Utsch for effective dramatic lighting and sound effects that emphasize Cindy Lou’s various mood changes.
