Masks optional in CASD

In a Dec. 11 message to families, Catasauqua Area School District Superintendent of Schools Robert Spengler announced a change in the district’s face-masking policy. Masking is now strongly encouraged but optional for all students and staff, effective Dec. 10.

This change comes as a result of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling that struck down the statewide mandate requiring masking in schools. Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court issued a Nov. 10 ruling in the Corman et al. Beam case voiding the Pennsylvania Department of Health order requiring face masks in schools. This most recent ruling is in response to an appeal filed by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf’s office.

The federal order requiring face masks to be worn on public transportation remains in effect. Students and staff must wear face masks while on all CASD vehicles.

Spengler urges families to encourage masking, social distancing to the greatest extent possible, enhanced disinfecting and other strategies. Hand washing and staying home when experiencing symptoms, such as fever or chills, trouble breathing, dry cough or loss of taste or smell, is urged.

Spengler also thanked district families for their support throughout the pandemic.

“Undeniably, your ability to adjust in the environment of constantly changing rules and guidance is admirable and appreciated,” he said.

He credits the district’s ability to continue offering five-day in-person learning, as well as a robust virtual option, for students to the support of the district families and staff.

“I am grateful for your support and humbled by your resilience,” he added.

Spengler encouraged parents and guardians to communicate with the school nurses if they have any questions or concerns about the health of their child, in addition to consulting their medical provider.

Families are also encouraged to contact their school building office with any questions.
