Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin and Pennsylvania State Police Troop M Capt. Derek A. Koch announced the arrest of former Olympic cyclist Martin Nothstein in a stalking case in a media release dated Dec. 8.

Martin Nothstein, 50, of Orefield, is charged with alleged criminal trespass, a felony of the third degree; two counts each of alleged stalking, misdemeanors of the first degree and alleged defiant trespass, a misdemeanor of the third degree.

Nothstein is a former Lehigh County Commissioner.

He won a silver medal in sprint cycling in the summer Olympic games in Atlanta, Ga., in 1996 and a gold medal in sprint cycling in the summer Olympic games in Sydney, Australia, in 2000.

According to the media release, Nothstein was taken into custody and arraigned Dec. 7.

Bail was set at $25,000 unsecured and he is to be supervised by Lehigh Valley Pretrial Services.

Nothstein was ordered to have no contact with the victims; one a female acquaintance of Nothstein and the other a male who authorities describe as “in a relationship with the female.”

The media release details the following:

The lead investigator in the case is Cpl. Christopher Yaworski of the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop M, Fogelsville station.

The allegations supporting the charges are presented in an affidavit of probable cause attached to and incorporated into the criminal complaint, sealed by the court pending arrest and preliminary arraignment.

According to authorities, the affidavit details incidents occurring between December 2020 and November, “which it is alleged constitute an ongoing pattern of stalking of both victims, harassment and damage to personal property.”

In the media release, authorities presented an example of an incident on or about March 22. The defendant allegedly entered the woman’s house without her consent and attempted to access her Apple account. The defendant later allegedly admitted he had entered the female’s home.

The March 22 incident provides the basis for the charges of criminal trespass and defiant trespass, according to authorities.

Additionally, investigators obtained phone records of the defendant through a search warrant.

Analysis of the phone records by the Regional Intelligence and Investigation Center places the defendant’s cellphones (he maintains two) in close proximity to the place and at the time of the alleged incidents.

Nothstein retired from competitive cycling in 2006. He also competed in world and United States championships in the sport and numerous other cycling contests.

Nothstein embarked on a political career, serving as a Lehigh County Commissioner and announcing bids for Pennsylvania’s 7th and 15th congressional districts.

Nothstein graduated from Emmaus High School in 1989.
