Kids Ready for More Northampton overcame adversity to produce 12-win season, look toward 2022

There were few bumps along Northampton’s 12-1 season this year.

The Konkrete Kids won the East Penn Conference North Division and capped their record-setting, 12-win season with a 47-13 victory over Catasauqua on Thanksgiving morning.

The Kids overcame the death of offensive coordinator Mike Grudineer from complications of COVID-19 early in the season. The team dedicated the season to him, and his memory stayed with them as an inspiration the rest of the schedule.

Northampton began the year with an emotional 17-14 over Bethlehem Catholic and former head coach Kyle Haas, and the Kids rode the wave through their next 10 contests, scoring 40 or more points in four of them.

Their streak of 11 wins ended in the semifinal round of the district playoffs with a 21-9 loss to eventual champion Freedom.

First-year head coach John Toman watched his team take control early against Catasauqua, and place the finishing touches on a memorable campaign. The Kids led 34-0 at halftime against the Roughies.

“We played a great first half doing exactly what we wanted to do,” he said. “We finished off the first half with an amazing trick play by guard Luke Baker. Felt like we went through the motions in the second half once we knew the outcome.

“It was an amazing ride winning our 12th game. I’m not sure any other team in the Valley reached 12 wins unless Northern Lehigh [does]. We’re super excited for our seniors ending on a positive note and finishing a historic season.

“With so many underclassmen playing a big role this year, the future is bright, and we can’t wait to get going in the offseason.”

Senior quarterback Cooper King, who threw for more than 1,400 yards with 16 touchdowns, appreciated the opportunities

“We were all very thankful to play on Thanksgiving, and it gave us a chance to end the season with a win,” he said. “We played well, but definitely came out slow in the second half. It was a good team win, and we’re glad to end the season that way.

“The season was everything we could have asked for. We came up short against Freedom, but we proved we weren’t some team hiding in the north. I am just so proud to take part in this historic 12-1 season.

“It is definitely difficult thinking back on the season and realizing how fast it flew by, but our team has definitely created a big legacy. We will always be remembered for our great season.”

Sophomore running back Caden Henritzy, who rushed for 936 yards with 14 touchdowns, took all the surroundings to heart.

“The game with Catty lived up to its expectations, and it was the last time we would play together,” he said. “It was my first time playing in the game, and it was fun with the traditions during the week making everything special.

“The atmosphere was great and the stadium was packed with fans. We knew we were a heavy favorite, so we just wanted to go out one last time and get the win.”

Henritzy also cherished the moments of a magical ride.

“It was a season in which we accomplished a lot,” he added. “There was a lot of adversity that we had to overcome. I loved playing with these guys, and I am going to miss some of them.

“We would run through walls for each other because we were a family. Coach Toman really brought us all together to make us one big family. This senior class set the expectations of our culture for years to come.”
