Grant awarded for Bicentennial Village

Alburtis Borough Council met Nov. 22 and began without public comment. After being virtual for the past few meetings, Mayor Kathleen Palmer was in attendance but had nothing to report.

The minutes of Nov. 10 and the bills for payment of Nov. 22 were approved.

In big news, $303,000 was awarded to Bicentennial Village from a Pennsylvania Multimodal Grant. Council President Ron DeIaco thanked the office of state Sen. Pat Browne, R-16th, for the $1 million granted to Alburtis this year.

There were seven agenda items in administration.

First, Zachary Bernhart, a local Boy Scout in Troop 86, gave a presentation on a plan he has for his Eagle Scout project. He plans to build a dedicated pathway with landscaping leading to the Memorial Plaque located next to the Alburtis Lockridge Historical Society off Church Lane. The project is expected to begin next spring.

Project estimates come to a little over $1,300. He attended the meeting to ask council for a contribution. Members of council thought it was a great idea and accepted his project. They agreed to help Bernhart cover costs after he completes his fundraisers for the project.

In parks and recreation, there was an update on the swing set purchase for the Alburtis upper ball field.

Chair Kathleen Raines asked council for a suggestion on where to put the swing set. Random fly balls coming from the ball field was a concern.

A new idea was suggested about purchasing a jungle gym and putting it by the volleyball courts. The four-person swing set was thought to be too small of a play item for a new purchase.

A motion was approved to inquire about a jungle gym for purchase in 2022 or 2023. More information will be given at the next meeting.

Alburtis Borough Council meeting dates for 2022 were approved for advertisement.

Resolution 2021-8 was then approved. This appointed Brandon Mengal to the Alburtis Park and Recreation Commission.

Following the resolution, a representative from TWG Security spoke on upgrades and repairs needed for the borough’s security system. Cameras and recording equipment need to be replaced at the recycling center, maintenance building, police station and borough hall.

Members of council asked questions on the cost of these upgrades. TWG Security affirmed there are no annual costs. The upgrades were approved after the discussion.

The last item was a request for a holiday luncheon for the borough’s employees. The request was approved by council.

The next Alburtis Borough Council meeting will take place 7 p.m. Dec. 8. The meetings are held at borough hall, 260 Franklin St. Residents can attend the meeting virtually by going to the Alburtis borough website.
