Autumn basket social benefits Northampton library programs

Northampton Area Public Library’s autumn basket social was held Oct. 22 at Northampton Banquet and Event Center, 1601 Laubach Ave.

The event, which has been taking place for more than 25 years and is the largest fundraiser of the year, was canceled last year because of the pandemic, like so many other things. With a bit of innovation, it was replaced by an online auction that succeeded in raising between $9,000 and $11,000 for the library, according to Karen Hein, acting director.

This year’s event was a little different as well, with guests required to wear masks and drawings being held after, rather than during, the event. However, tickets were available for purchase at the door, and people had a chance to view the offerings in person.

In addition, the community center was offering food with a small sit-down area.

Approximately 550 items were offered this year, including baskets, gift cards and individual items, all of which were donated by local businesses and patrons. There were also special big-ticket items, a 50/50 drawing and a bake sale with individually wrapped goods.

With 10 categories of baskets, there was something for everyone. Categories included food, entertainment, kids, home, health and beauty and miscellaneous, which had items like luggage and wood burning kits. There were also Christmas baskets with tree certificates, “guy stuff” with sports items and snacks.

Among the three big-ticket baskets were one with a lottery board of cash and lottery tickets, one with a bottle of Scotch and cigars and a holiday basket filled with wrapping paper, boxes, hot chocolate and Godiva chocolates.

The event is always free to attend, and ticket prices range from $10 for a sheet of 26 tickets for regular items to one for $2 or three for $5 for the big tickets. All proceeds benefit the library, which will use the funding to buy more computers, programming and technology, as well as new materials such as books and databases.

Although prize sponsors are far too numerous to list in entirety, the platinum business sponsor was Koehler Brothers Collision Repair. Gold business sponsors include Horwith Trucks Inc., Diner 248, Becky’s Drive In, Robbins Rehabilitation and Reichel Funeral Home. Silver business sponsors were Gorman and Associates P.C., Schisler Funeral Home, Sean Heffelfinger, M.D., Michael Benavage, M.D., Bath Supply Company Inc., Bath Republican Club, M&M Lawn Service Inc. and St. Peter and Paul Society.

Many private patrons donated as well. Through everyone’s generosity, the library continues to thrive.

Next year’s autumn social is scheduled for Oct. 7, 2022. Save the date!
