Truck traffic concerns raised

Residents near Sauerkraut Lane expressed concern for truck traffic along Sauerkraut Lane through correspondence sent to the township. This situation was presented during the Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners meeting Nov. 18. Sauerkraut Lane has become a frequent route for tractor trailers traveling to the warehouses and the concern is this route will become more popular when the extension is completed.

The roads are not built to accommodate them as well as the noise they create, occurring in the very early morning hours. These residents are encouraging better signage as well as more hefty fines with monitoring of the situation.

In other business, Resolution 2021-58 was approved for a design manual for 5G small wireless facilities.

Resolution 2021-59 was approved for an additional temporary grading easement for Liberty Property relating to the Sauerkraut Lane extension.

Tom Deily and Lisa Gantert have submitted notices to not be appointed to the parks and recreation board. Dain King has also requested not to be reappointed to the library board. The three individuals have been longtime volunteers in the township. A letter of thanks will be sent to them.

Rebecca George, the athletic director for Emmaus High School, is requesting use of the baseball fields at Church Lane Park which was approved. Commissioner Brian Higgins suggested this become a long-term agreement. This will be considered with the township and the school district.

A resident expressed concerns over conditions at Prater Park. The park is located in the Clearview Manor area. Particularly noted are the tennis courts. The township is aware they are in need of repair but it became a time and money situation. The weather is not conducive to these repairs presently. Work is planned for the spring.

The 2022 budget is ready to be advertised. There is no increase in the real estate tax. It will remain at .5 mils as well as the .25 mils library tax. The land preservation tax is being considered since the voters approved it.

The township is considering purchasing a Cat 938M Wheel Loader from Foley Inc. in the amount of $233,403. This purchase was to be considered next year but due to current economics, it is recommended to purchase now. It will take time for shipping and the price is set to increase by $12,000. It was approved.

The Lower Macungie Township Troop support has been acknowledged by the Lehigh Valley Military Affairs program. In turn, they have given the group $440. ProLogis also continues to provide free shipping for these items.

Shepherd’s Corner has announced a new addition to their development. It will be Jake’s Wayback Burger. Higgins expressed his concern due to the fact this restaurant is very close to another similar restaurant.

Woodmont Phase 2 has been considered for mixed use. This development will have two buildings and apartments. Macungie Crossings is considering Home Depot for their land on Hamilton Boulevard.

Also being considered is Mill Creek Apartments next to Dries on Brookside Road. Flood data has been submitted for study.

Mill Creek Pizza is considering establishing a brewery in their already established business on Mill Creek Road.

Fields of Brookside, a Macungie development, is submitting its preliminary final plan.

The former Weis Market location is being considered as a neighborhood hospital and medical office development.

With the loss of two parks and recreation volunteers, the board may reorganize. Projects and goals are being re-established. Among the many accomplishments of the board is the new signage at Lower Macungie Township parks.
