Richard A. Smith, 88, of Allentown and formerly of Whitehall, died Oct. 30, 2021, at Phoebe Home, Allentown. He was the husband of the late Orchys R. (Kohler) Smith.
Born in Northampton, he was a son of the late Milton R. and Esther F. (Nause) Smith.
He was a Northampton High School graduate.
He was a facilities manager/supervisor for PP&L Electric Company, Allentown, for 36 years until he retired in 1994.
He was a past council member of the former St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Whitehall, and was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Northampton.
He was a longtime member and chief of the former Laurel Fire Company, Cementon. He was a member and a former vice-president of Four County Fireman’s Associations. He was a local level instructor for the Pennsylvania Fire Academy, Lewistown, for 20 years; was a member of the International Association of Fire Instructors; was formerly on the Northampton County Community College Board of Fire Technology for 20 years; and was a former member of the National Fire Protection Association for 15 years. He was a life member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs.
He was a member of the F&AM Chapman Lodge 637, Northampton. He was a 32nd degree mason with Lehigh Consistory, Valley of Allentown; and a member of the Rajah Shriners, Reading.
He is survived by two daughters, Holly C. and her husband George J. Stitts Jr. of Northampton and Terry L. and her husband Eugene Kovalchick of Southampton; three grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Robert W. Smith.
