Dr. Lee C. Schisler Sr.

Dr. Lee C. Schisler Sr., 93, of State College, died Oct. 27, 2021. He was the husband of the late Lois G. Schisler for 66 years.

Born in Northampton, he was a son of the late Albert F. and Ruth E. (Young) Schisler.

He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in botany, and a Ph.D. in botany and plant pathology, from The Pennsylvania State University. He played four years of varsity basketball at Penn State.

He was a corporal in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps from 1952 to 1954.

He worked as an agricultural chemicals researcher for the American Chemical Paint Company in 1952. He was research director for the Butler County Mushroom Farm, West Winfield. He then joined the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Penn State. He was director of the Mushroom Research Center at Penn State from 1968 until 1988.

He was an honorary visiting professor July 1974-June 1975 at the University of British Columbia, Canada. He retired from Penn State in December 1988 as a Professor Emeritus of Plant Pathology. He was named an Outstanding Alumnus of the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences for 2007.

He was a longtime member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, State College, and a supporter and attendee of the Bald Eagle Valley Community United Methodist Church, Wingate.

He was a decadeslong member of the Rotary Club. He and his late wife delivered Meals on Wheels.

He is survived by two sons, Lee Jr. of Warriors Mark and David with Carolyn Tidball of Peoria, Ill.; and two grandchildren, Andrew and Natalie Schisler.

He was predeceased by a brother, Albert Schisler of Northampton.
