Bethlehem Catholic and Allentown Central Catholic’s girls soccer teams had already established a tradition of low-scoring games against each other this season, so it was probably no surprise that history would repeat itself in the District XI Class 3A semifinal last Tuesday at Catasauqua Middle School’s Alumni Field.
In the end, the Vikettes came out on top with a 1-0 victory over the Golden Hawks.
“We had a lot of close games, and this one, I think honestly, could’ve gone either way,” said Becahi head coach Brad Kratzer.
Midway through the first half, Central Catholic midfielder Molly Driscoll scored the lone goal.
“It was just rolling around, right in the middle of the goal, so I just kicked it,” Driscoll said. “Coach (Rob Spatzer) said to come to this game mad because the scores from the other games don’t really reflect who we are as a team.”
The second half appeared to provide more chances for the Hawks when midfielder Teighan Boyle took a shot that rolled off the fingertips of keeper Armani Brickhouse.
Another shot by Tealyn Boyle went wide to the right.
“It looked a lot better in the second half. We knew exactly what Central was going to do, very direct,” said Coach Kratzer. “We’re just a very young team, returning nine of 11 starters, so I feel like this team is really well set for a deep run next year. We finished the season 8-9-3, closed the gap with all the big schools, made district semifinals for the first time in Beca history for girls. The accomplishments are endless.”
