WWII veteran shares wartime experiences with PA Cyber students Former Navy officer details wartime training, traveling and battle engagements

PA Cyber hosted World War II veteran and former Chief Petty Officer Mathias Gutman for an exclusive virtual presentation to students ahead of Veterans Day.

The 20-minute presentation highlighted Gutman’s years of service and experience in the U.S. Navy.

Students learned about Gutman’s experiences and what it means to celebrate Veterans Day in the Nov. 10 presentation.

Allentown native Gutman shared with students a handful of stories and key experiences from his 22 years of service in the Navy.

Gutman enlisted in the U.S. Navy following inspiration from his two older brothers who served before World War II.

“I used to wear my brother’s Navy cap to school,” Gutman said. “I’d never seen the ocean growing up, but I’d seen the ocean when I got into the Navy.”

Following his six-year enlistment, Gutman married, and together the couple raised three children.

Toward the end of his eight years away from his service in the Navy, his neighbor, a Navy lieutenant at the time, knew of Gutman’s World War II service and approached him about becoming a Navy instructor in the Active Navy Reserve.

This opportunity led Gutman to 15 years training incoming U.S. Navy members.

His inspiring career serving the country came to an end in 1973 following his retirement from the Active Navy Reserve.

The virtual presentation exposed students to a pivotal time in world history with relevant visuals to accompany Gutman’s personal accounts of World War II.

Reminding them why Veterans Day is an important holiday to honor those who have served, Gutman’s story speaks to perseverance, determination, and unwavering bravery.

Students learned important historical lessons about this nation’s past and how those difficult times have shaped the way Veterans Day is honored in the 21st century.

The public will be able to view Gutman’s presentation beginning Nov. 11.
