Wenger paces girls team to bronze medal

After a season of highlights, the Parkland girls cross country team created one more highlight last Thursday by finishing third at the District 11 Class 3A cross country championships at DeSales University.

The Trojans earned the finish with 76 points and a 21:04 team average, 22 seconds behind first place Emmaus and four seconds behind second place Southern Lehigh.

Leading Parkland was junior Elena Wenger, who finished 10th overall by registering a 20:43.41 time, just ahead of Stroudsburg’s Deandra Young at 20:43.84.

“Running has positively impacted me not only physically, but also mentally,” said Wenger. “In terms of fitness, it is an excellent way to stay in shape and push me to beat past records of mine, which also helps in many other activities and sports I participate.”

Jessica Price was the next Parkland finisher in 20:47, good for 12th overall. Gracie Trexler finished third on the Trojan roster in 20:52 and Abbey Bender took fourth, 15th and 20th overall. Lucy Tobia, Zoe Patselas and Emily Beers rounded-out the Parkland squad.

“I was very happy with my race, just because it was my best time this year,” said Beers. “I’m a senior, so this was my last race so it’s nice to end strong and finish on a good note.”
