Trojans nab top seed in three sports
The District 11 playoffs began last week in field hockey, soccer and volleyball. Semifinals and championship games are slated for this week in all four sports.
BOYS SOCCER
Salisbury qualified for districts in boys soccer, earning the No. 9 seed in Class 2A and falling to Bethlehem Catholic 7-2 in a first-round game. The Golden Hawks went on to lose to rival Central Catholic in the quarterfinals, 5-1. The Vikings advanced to take on No. 4 Jim Thorpe in Tuesday’s semifinals. The No. 4 seed Olympians beat Pine Grove Area 1-0 in the quarterfinal round.
On the bottom half of the Class 2A bracket, No. 7 Pen Argyl beat No. 10 Tamaqua 2-0 in a first-round game, then lost to No. 2 seed Notre Dame (Green Pond) 4-1 in a quarterfinal game. The Crusaders advanced to face No. 6 Palisades in the semifinals. The Pirates beat No. 3 Nativity in their quarterfinal game, 5-0.
In Class 4A, top-seeded Freedom topped Stroudsburg in the quarterfinal round and will take on No. 4 Emmaus in the semifinals. The Hornets beat Easton 4-1 in their quarterfinal. The other semifinal pits No. 3 Nazareth against No. 2 Parkland. The Eagles beat No. 6 Whitehall 4-1 in the first round, while the Trojans toped Pleasant Valley 2-1.
In Class 3A, Colonial League champ and top seed Northwestern Lehigh had a bye into the semifinals where it was slated to meet No. 4 East Stroudsburg South. The Cavaliers beat No. 5 Saucon Valley 3-2 in the quarterfinals.
On the bottom half of the 3A bracket, No. 3 Southern Lehigh beat No. 6 Bangor 2-1 in the quarterfinals, while No. 2 Blue Mountain beat No. 7 Wilson 4-1 to reach the semifinal round.
Class A had two pigtail games as No. 4 Tri-Valley beat No. 5 Salem Christian 4-2 and No. 3 Notre Dame (East Stroudsburg) topped No. 6 Lincoln Leadership Academy 4-1. The Spartans earned a matchup with No. 2 seed Schuylkill Haven in the semifinals, while Tri-Valley advanced to take on top-seeded Moravian Academy.
GIRLS SOCCER
In Class 4A, No. 8 Pocono Mountain East beat No. 9 Stroudsburg in a pigtail game, 3-2, before falling to top-seeded Parkland in the quarterfinals. No. 4 Emmaus beat No. 5 Freedom 3-0 in their quarterfinal matchup as the Hornets and Trojans advanced to face one another in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, No. 3 Nazareth topped No. 6 Pleasant Valley 2-0 in the quarterfinals to earn a game against No. 2 Easton in semifinals. The Rovers beat No. 7 Northampton 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
In Class 3A, No. 3 Southern Lehigh beat No. 6 Saucon Valley on one quarterfinal, while No. 4 Blue Mountain topped No. 5 Bangor in the other. The Eagles advance to take on top seed Northwestern in semifinals, while the Spartans meet No. 2 Pottsville in semis.
Class 2A needed just two quarterfinals. No. 3 Pine Grove beat No. 6 Notre Dame (Green Pond) 2-0 to advance to the semifinals against No. 2 Palmerton. No. 5 Bethlehem Catholic beat No. 4 Jim Thorpe 1-0 on penalty kicks to reach the semifinals against top seed Central Catholic.
In Class A, three quarterfinal games were played while top seed Schuylkill Haven had a bye. No. 4 e Williams Valley beat No. 5 Nativity 6-1 and will meet the Hurricanes in semis. No. 3 Northern Lehigh beat No. 6 Minersville 7-1 and will take on No. 2 Moravian Academy in semifinals. The Lions beat No. 7 Tri-Valley 4-0 in quarterfinals.
FIELD HOCKEY
In Class 3A, East Penn Conference champ and top seed Emmaus is seeking it’s 39th straight district title. The Hornets, which were tested in a 2-1 league title game win over Easton, beat Whitehall 12-0 in the first round to earn a rematch with the No. 4 seed Rovers in the semifinals. Easton beat Northampton 3-2 in the quarterfinal round.
On the other side of the 3A bracket, No. 3 Parkland beat Liberty 1-0 to reach the semifinals. The Trojans will meet No. 2 seed Nazareth in the next round. Nazareth beat Stroudsburg 1-0 in the first round.
Semifinals are slated for Wednesday night while the title game will be played Saturday at Whitehall as part of a field hockey championship triple-header.
In Class 2A, just four teams made districts. Top seed Southern Lehigh matched up with Lehighton in the semifinals, while No. 2 Pocono Mountain East took on Bangor in Tuesday’s other semifinal. The winners will meet Saturday.
In Class A, top-seeded Moravian Academy had a bye into the semifinals where the Lions will take on No. 4 Palisades, which beat Northwestern 1-0 in the first round. No. 2 seed Palmerton also had a bye into the semifinals, which are slated for Wednesday. The Bombers will take on No. 3 seed Wilson, which beat Bethlehem Catholic 6-0 in the first round.
VOLLEYBALL
In Class 4A, top seed Parkland beat No. 8 Pleasant Valley in the first round then topped No. 4 Liberty to advance to Wednesday’s title match. The Trojans will meet No. 2 Freedom in the championship. The Patriots beat No. 3 Emmaus in semis.
Class 3A will see No. 2 Pottsville and No. 3 Bethlehem Catholic compete in the title match. The Golden Hawks beat No. 6 Lehighton and No. 2 Southern Lehigh to reach finals. Pottsville took out No. 8 Saucon Valley and No. 4 Blue Mountain on its road to the title match.
In Class 2A, top seed Pine Grove will take on No. 2 Central Catholic in the final. The Cardinals had a quarterfinal bye then beat No. 4 Notre Dame (Green Pond) in the semis. Central had a bye before beating No. 3 Panther Valley in the semifinal round.
Class A will have top seed Marian Catholic taking on No. 3 Nativity. The Fillies had a quarterfinal-round bye before beating Mahanoy Area in the semifinals. Nativity beat No. 7 Shenandoah Valley in the first round and then topped No. 2 seed Tri-Valley in the second round.
