Kids anxious to get playoffs started
Northampton running back Caden Henritzy is enjoying his team’s undefeated season, and he doesn’t see it ending soon heading into the postseason..
“Our motto heading into practice last week was ‘make history,’” he stressed. “We just did it. This game will be remembered for a long time.
“This team believes in each other so much, and we all work very hard toward our goals. It’s really special to see that hard work paying off.”
Henritzy ran for a game-high 113 yards on 30 carries and scored the game’s lone touchdown in the Konkrete Kids’ 7-0 win at Whitehall last week that gave them the first 10-0 regular-season mark in school history. Northampton previously had 9-0 teams.
On a night when rain and wind played a major factor, the Kids kept it on the ground all night, gaining 250 total yards rushing on 56 carries.
“The game against Whitehall was a hard-fought game,” added Henritzy. “It was tough because we couldn’t pass the ball due to the crazy weather. We knew we had to step it up in the run game.
“We prepared for that and executed just like (head coach John) Toman expected. The defense played out of their minds against an athletic Whitehall team.”
Quarterback Cooper King, who hasn’t thrown an interception all season with his 14 touchdowns, also envisions a long ride ahead.
“We are all very excited about the 10-0 regular season,” he said. “It feels great to be part of history, and to be one of the few teams that went undefeated.”
With the win, the Kids kept their number-two spot in the district Class 6A bracket, and they will host Pleasant Valley (5-4) Friday night. In a regular-season matchup, the Kids dumped the host Bears, 35-12 on Oct. 8. Henritzy rushed for 56 yards and scored three touchdowns in the game.
“We are fully focused on this playoff game, and going against Pleasant Valley is going to be a challenge,” added King. “Playing a team for the second time is always hard, so we have to prepare and get ready for this big game.”
Toman knows his team has to maintain its vision.
“PV (Pleasant Valley) will shorten the game with the type of offense they run,” he said. “The triple offense inherently will reduce the number of possessions so you need to be efficient with your own possessions. Their offense runs through their quarterback.
Defensively, they will throw multiple fronts at us in efforts to control our run game.
“We need to take care of the football and create some turnovers.”
PREDICTION: The Kids have just seven turnovers all season -- all fumbles ... Pleasant Valley has been fueled by quarterback Rob Papaleo, who has rushed for over 700 yards and thrown for more than 400. Jarrod Moore is their primary back, and Ryan Blass has been the main target ... The Bears have dropped three of their last four games, but they are coming off a 14-7 win over Stroudsburg ... The Kids have outscored their opponents, 347-88. Since their 21-20 comeback victory over East Stroudsburg South, Kids have allowed a combined total of 35 over their last four games ... Northampton’s last appearance in districts was in 2019 when they lost a 42-37 shootout. The Kids last won a district game in 2008 when they went 10-3 under Bob Steckel ... If they win, NHS will likely host third-seeded Freedom ... Northampton’s character was tested against Whitehall in a heated rivalry game, and the Kids didn’t bend. They will be tested again by Papaleo, but these kids haven’t been stirred all season, notably by their comeback against East Stroudsburg South ... It will be another night in the town ... Where can I find a good hoagie in Northampton? Coach Toman or Scott Pagel owes me one (Editor’s note, he does own him) ... K-KIDS, 32-14.
