Moore police chief asks supervisors to purchase two vehicles

At the Oct. 7 Moore Township Board of Supervisors meeting, township police Chief Gary West asked the township to pursue the purchase of two new police cars, via a Local Share Account grant, at a total cost of $106,000.

He also reported that, through a cooperative agreement with Bushkill Township, there will be a purchase of truck weight scales at a cost of about $45,000 to the township, which is expected to be reimbursed from an LSA grant.

West also noted there were 358 incidents with six arrests during September. The arrests were two driving under the influence, two thefts, one terroristic threat and one burglary.

Jason Harhart provided the fire and ambulance reports for September. The fire department had 43 calls, including six motor vehicle accidents and one fire. The ambulance service responded to 58 calls in September.

The public works department responded to a drainage complaint on Carol Lane. There is a potential safety issue on Pool Road, it was mentioned. There are reported illegal left-hand turns occurring at a church driveway from Pheasant Drive. A recommendation is to make Pool Road one way from Pool Road to Pheasant Drive.

Township resident Jeff Ayers said, “Something has to be done. We can’t wait until someone gets killed.”

Supervisor Chairman Daniel Piorkowski wondered if a barrier could be inserted at the intersection to guide traffic.

Township Engineer Kevin Horvath said Pennsylvania Department of Transportation would have to get involved if the township planned to pursue some sort of barrier. Horvath said he would look into the matter and report to the board.

In his First Regional Compost Authority report, Supervisor Richard K. Gable said the FRCA is no longer taking grass clippings for the remainder of 2021. FRCA has a problem with its grinder, thereby experiencing delays in grinding brush. He further noted leaves will soon be coming to the FRCA facility, also complicating its work.

In his report, township Manager Nicholas C. Steiner noted a 2022 budget workshop meeting was set for Oct. 27.

Steiner added the Susquehanna Municipal Trust Grant is providing money that will be used to purchase an automated external defibrillator for the township.

In another matter, the board passed two ordinances: 2021-5 and 2021-6. Ordinance No. 5 addresses Dell Road Truck restrictions, and No. 6 removes Trapper Road from the township road file. Both ordinances are available for review from the township office.

The next board of supervisors meeting is set for 6 p.m. Nov. 4 in the social hall at Klecknersville Rangers Volunteer Fire Company, 2718 Mountain View Road, Moore Township. It is an in-person meeting only.
