Olatilo’s goals lead PHS to league gold
Demi Olatilo is one of the quietest players on the team, according to her coaching staff and teammates, but she made a lot of noise in her latest game. Olatilo scored two goals and helped lead the Parkland High School girls soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Easton in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference final last Saturday afternoon at Emmaus High School’s Memorial Field. It is the seventh consecutive conference championship for the Trojans (13-2-1 overall).
“Demi is a rock for us with all the work she does in the midfield,” head coach Al Haddad said. “She scored four goals against Stroudsburg (in the EPC quarterfinals on Monday) and that was a breakout game for her.”
The Red Rovers (15-4-1) were the team that opened up with some scoring chances, but Parkland’s defense held firm and they were the ones that got onto the scoreboard first. Olatilo found the back of the net with 26:18 left in the opening half, and the game went to halftime with the Trojans ahead 1-0.
Easton responded right out of the gate after halftime as Aminah Baruwa used her speed down the right sideline to get past a defender and drill home the tying goal just 19 seconds in.
“We knew we had to stay optimistic and show no frustration,” said Olatilo. “We knew that we had the ability to win the game as long as we stayed focused and played our game.”
Parkland did find its groove and was able to play with its pace for a majority of the second half. Olatilo once again broke the deadlock, this time with her left foot and slotted it past the goalie for a 2-1 lead with 19:28 remaining.
“I’d say half of my goals I scored with my left foot,” Olatilo said. “I was looking for that goal. When I got the ball, my teammates were yelling ‘yourself, yourself.’”
Junior Isabella Brans tacked on an insurance goal later that half to give the Trojans a two-goal cushion. Sophia Frank finished with two saves in net for Parkland.
The Trojans received the top seed in the District 11 playoffs and earned a bye into the quarterfinals. They will play Thursday against the winner of the Stroudsburg-Pocono Mountain East first-round game.
