Falcons complete successful tennis season

The Salisbury High School tennis team finished off a successful 2021 fall season. It was something that head coach Stan Fidrych is proud of his program for.

“This past season was filled with achievement even though we played through a full schedule with only the minimum number of players needed to compete,” said Fidrych. “However, each player stepped up and took this team to one of their best win-loss records in Colonial league play, ending at 10-3.”

Just like with any season, the program had some highs and lows. But, especially this season, the Falcons had more proud moments they can look back on with success on and off the court.

“At the start of the year with home matches, the entire team took down any and all opponents as both our double and singles players garnered easy wins,” Fidrych said. “Once on the road, the fight got harder, especially at Notre Dame (Green Pond) when our team was one player short but just lost a close one, 2-3. I will not forget one match vs. Jim Thorpe when our No. 1 singles player could not make the match. We had to move our No. 2 singles player up to play their top player and she met the challenge and won in a tough three set match. She is a senior and became our MVP for the year. The team score was 3-2 Salisbury.”

Salisbury will graduate a strong group of seniors that led the program this season in both experience and overall play at the top of the lineup.

“Our four starting seniors led the way with experience and top play,” said Fidrych. “They each contributed with winning records that led us to five medals at the Colonial League championships and a solid third place in league play.”

Next season will be here before they know it, and the Falcons are looking forward to continued success moving forward.

“I am optimistic about next year, even though we lose four senior starters,” Fidrych said. “I see the team depending on our six underclassmen and any new recruits, as it will be a rebuilding year. To encourage new players and to get our current team ready, I will be offering a clinic open to any Salisbury students who are in grades 8-12 at the Salisbury Middle School courts in June.”
