Fighting Hunger: Free community meals have started; attendance has increased

Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative and the faith-based community have resumed providing free community meals to low-income Whitehall-Coplay households since WCHI had to close down the meals 19 months ago due to COVID-19.

These meals are available twice a month through December. The host locations change every time. All are welcome to attend both meals 4-6:30 p.m. the first Sunday and third Tuesday of each month.

Meals are guaranteed for the first 100 guests.

Each location will state if the meal is a drop-and-go distribution or if it is a dine-in meal and if masks are required or not. We will post the host site requirements on Facebook.

Our October meals were very successful for just starting them again and for reaching out to the residents to know the meal locations and times. Both October meals were drop-and-go pickup hot meals.

The Oct. 3 meal was provided by Muslim Association of Lehigh Valley. They made gyros and had chips, applesauce and homemade dessert. There were 43 meals served to 25 adults, 14 children and four seniors.

The Oct. 19 meal was provided by Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. Volunteers made a version of shepherd’s pie, applesauce and homemade dessert. There were 98 meals served to 42 adults, 19 children and 37 seniors.

The meal attendance is picking up due to increased marketing and our guests knowing about them.

The November and December locations are:

• Nov. 7: St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 835 Third St., Whitehall. From Grape Street, turn right on Third, left on Quarry Street, right into the church parking lot and right in the alley to get to the church side door. This is a drop-and-go meal. Information: 610-533-1357

• Nov. 16: Whitehall Bible Fellowship Church, 3300 Seventh St., Whitehall. Information: 610-434-8861

• Dec. 5: Muslim Association of Lehigh Valley, 1988 Schadt Ave., Whitehall. Information: 703-346-8698

• Dec. 21: St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 835 Third St., Whitehall. Information: 610-533-1357

We do have a few open dates available to host a 2022 meal. Local Whitehall and Coplay restaurants can also cook a meal for us to provide at a host site for any open dates. Please contact me with questions or to schedule.

WCHI is in need of boxed stuffing, boxed mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce for our holiday pantry distributions Nov. 11 and Dec. 9. See other needed items at tinyurl.com/WCHIpantrylist.

Food donations should be dropped off at or shipped to WCHI at my Re/Max Unlimited Office, 1080 Schadt Ave., Whitehall, 18052.

Leave donations inside the foyer on the right 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sundays. Please contact me with any questions.

Thank you, and have a great week!
