Supporter urges voters to protect open space

To the Editor:

On Nov. 2 the residents of Lower Macungie Township will be asked to approve a referendum that will authorize the township to make a small increase in the earned income tax to provide funds for the purpose of protecting open space in the township.

Despite rapid growth in the last 20 years, Lower Macungie Township retains its rural character, but unless we take action now, most of the existing farms and open space will eventually be developed. The township, together with Wildlands Conservancy, has already protected hundreds of acres, but most of the existing open space is still not protected.

This referendum will allow the township to protect additional open space areas. This is not a panacea, and much more will need to be done, but it is an important step. The township’s comprehensive plan identifies farms and other areas that need to be protected if we are to avoid the problems of over development. More development will mean increased traffic and air pollution and the need for costly improvements including additional schools and road construction which could destroy historical areas and change the character of the township.

We have seen the loss of farms to warehouses, in the western part of the township. Further warehouse development should now be prevented by recent revisions to the zoning code, but we could see other development replace farms and eliminate the South Mountain forests.

I urge my fellow residents to vote yes on this issue so we can continue to enjoy the beauty and character of Lower Macungie Township.
