Salisbury falls to ACC
When it comes to Colonial League tennis, Moravian Academy is in a class by itself.
Not only have the Lions dominated the league in recent seasons, but they’ve been a perennial power in Class 2A at both the district and state level as well.
Salisbury coach Stan Fidrych knows his 2021 team might not be in Moravian Academy’s class, but he’s thrilled with the grades the Falcons have achieved.
“I’m really happy with what we accomplished during the regular season and at the Colonial League Tournament,” Fidrych said recently. “Moravian is just so talented, and Southern Lehigh is another great program.
“But we finished third behind those two teams during the regular season and at the league tournament. That’s an outstanding accomplishment for our program.”
Fidrych said the Falcons (7-3 regular season) came out of the league tournament with medals in three of the five divisions.
“We won a silver medal and two bronze medals,” he explained. “That’s the most I can remember us ever winning.
“Going into that tournament, we wanted to play the best tennis we were capable of playing and we wanted to win some medals - and we did just that. We had outstanding results.”
Salisbury got a silver medal from its No. 1 doubles team of Marcie Silberman and Maisie Oliver, who beat teams from Bangor and Southern Lehigh before losing to a Moravian Academy team in the final.
The Falcons’ bronze medals came from Mackenzie Hankee at No. 2 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Anna Bitar and Mia Kezengwa.
Hankee won her quarterfinal against a Palisades opponent, fell to a Southern Lehigh player in the semis, then beat a Notre Dame girl in the consolation match.
Meanwhile, Bitar and Kezengwa breezed to a win over Pen Argyl in their opener, lost Moravian Academy in the semis, and then outlasted Bangor in the third-place match.
Salisbury hoped to build on that momentum in the District 11 Tournaments - singles, team and doubles. But some tough draws prevented that in the singles and team tourneys.
On Wednesday, Oct. 6, Krista Bonge and Hankee both suffered straight-set losses in the opening round of singles play.
“I thought Krista and Mackenzie both played well,” Fidrych said following their elimination. “We got unlucky with the draws as Krista drew the No. 1 seed and Mackenzie got the No. 2 seed.
“But they both battled. Krista in particular had a really nice performance. She made her opponent really work for her points.”
On Monday, Oct. 11, Salisbury was swept by Eastern Pennsylvania Conference power Allentown Central Catholic in the quarterfinals of the Team Tournament.
Salisbury will close out District 11 postseason play next week with the District 11 Doubles Tournament.
“We are excited about our doubles teams,” Fidrych said. “The field and seeds haven’t been announced yet, but we expect to get two teams in the tournament.
“Marcie (Silberman) and Maisie (Oliver) were our No. 1 doubles team and they should make it, and then we will put Krista (Bonge) and Mackenzie (Hankee) together and they should get in too.”
