The 2021 Emmaus girls tennis regular season produced a 17-1 record. Last week two members of that singles contingent, which factored so heavily into that record, participated in the District 11 Class 3A girls singles tournament.
Jocelyn Chow and teammate Shelby Carter each won their first-round match last Wednesday at Lehigh University before losing in the quarterfinals.
Chow, who has been the Hornets’ number one singles player this season and was the tournament’s sixth seed, easily took care of Strousburg’s Emma Schomberg 6-0, 6-2 in her first-round match. But Chow was overwhelmed in her quarterfinal battle with Parkland’s Erin Joo, falling 6-0, 6-0.
“Jocelyn played well,” said Emmaus head coach Robert Dragotta.
Carter, who was the eighth seed, played solid tennis in the first round in defeating Nazareth’s Angela Moncavage 6-0, 6-2. The quarterfinal competition proved more challenging as Carter battled Stroudsburg’s Paras Briegel. That was the end of the line for Carter, who lost 6-2, 6-1 to the eventual tournament champion.
“Shelby played Paras, the three-time district champion very tough in the second round,” said Dragotta. “She lost, but there were several other deuce games. Shelby played a great match.”
It was Briegel’s third consecutive District 11 Class 3A girls championship. She beat Joo in the final match.
The District 11 3A team tournament is scheduled to take place Oct. 11, 12 and 14.
