Magliochetti takes silver
Bethlehem Catholic number one singles tennis player Cara Magliochetti won the District XI Class 2A silver medal in the district singles championships played last week at Parkland High School.
Allentown Central Catholic’s Sabrina Yurconic won the final match, 6-4, 6-2, to become district champion.
“She was just really consistent when I played her, so I just tried to get one more ball back,” Magliochetti said. “There were a lot of points where I was going for shots that weren’t necessarily there and end the point a little too soon. When the opportunity was there for me to finish the point, I think I executed that pretty well.”
Magliochetti reached the district final by defeating Moravian Academy’s Isabella Bartolacci, 6-1, 6-0.
“Obviously, I wanted to win (the final), but I was happy I got into the final, and that I beat Bella because I’ve never beaten her before, so I was really excited to get that win,” said Magliochetti.
The Becahi junior was also happy to have improved upon her third place finish from last year, even though she had to face teammate Taylor Adams in the quarterfinal this year.
“I was down 0-4 in the first set. My strategy in every match is basically get one more ball back,” Magliochetti said. “I talked to [Taylor] before and said could we try and keep this lighthearted, so we talked on every changeover and stuff like that. I didn’t want it to be intense.”
Magliochetti won the match with scores of 6-4, 6-1.
Bethlehem Catholic, coached by George Harmanos, won its first match in the District XI Team Tennis Championships, which began on Monday and is scheduled to finish on Thursday.
The Hawks defeated Notre Dame Green Pond in the 2A quarterfinal, 5-0, at Becahi.
In singles matches, Magliochetti defeated Amber Unger, 6-0, 6-0, Adams defeated Keiran Lencheski, 7-6, 2-1 (Lencheski retired), and Isabella Bautista defeated Raissa Kom, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles matches, Patty Superka and Grace Hartman defeated Kathy Lopez and Claire Ceraul, 6-0, 6-1, and Maddie Lennert and Ava Burkart won by default.
The Hawks will have played their semifinal match against Blue Mountain on Tuesday at Becahi, hoping to reach the district final, scheduled for Thursday at Lehigh University.
