Girls clinch EPC berth, WHS looms
With the postseason slated to begin on Saturday, it looks like the Northampton field hockey team is peaking at the right time. They have won 8 out their last 10 games to bring their record to 10-7 with one game left in the regular season.
Their latest win, 1-0 triumph at Liberty on Tuesday, clinched a berth in the EPC playoffs. The K-Kids had already clinched a spot in districts with a win against East Stroudsburg North on Saturday.
The win over the Hurricanes did not come easily. The transportation scheduled to take the team to BASD Stadium was late, giving Northampton a mere 20 minutes to warm up and go through their pregame preparations.
The travel snafu bled into the Kids’ performance as they were outshot by Liberty 6-0 over the first three periods. Goalie Kadee Schrader’s acrobatic goalkeeping kept the Hurricanes off the board and the teams entered the final quarter knotted at zero.
Northampton dominated the fourth period, generating 6 corners to 1 for Liberty and had a 5 to 1 advantage in shots on goal. The only shot that really mattered was Taylor Kranzley flicking home a loose ball in front of the cage at 6:07 for the game’s only goal.
The final game of the regular season will take place tonight at Al Erdosy Stadium against Whitehall for Senior Night. The Zephyrs are 9-8 on the season and need a win to qualify for the EPC tournament.
For the K-Kids, the game has major implications for EPC and district seeding. A loss would put them in the 8 spot and the dreaded matchup with Emmaus in the EPC quarterfinal. A win likely gets them the 7 seed and a trip to either Nazareth or Easton this Saturday.
For districts, Northampton is guaranteed to avoid Emmaus in the quarters. A win could put them as high as the 5 seed. The district quarterfinals are October 28.
