Girls eying District 11 playoff berth
After battling through a difficult opening stretch to their season, the Northampton field hockey team finally has their record over .500 at 7-6.
This past Saturday, the K-Kids welcomed District 3 foe Muhlenberg to Al Erdosy Stadium. Northampton scored 2 goals in the first six minutes of the game and cruised to a 3-0 win.
Senior Eliza Rogerson scored at 12:37 of the first period on a goal assisted by Raegan Iasiello. Rogerson assessed the team’s progress through two-thirds of the season.
“It took us a while to find our groove, but we’re definitely starting to get into it now,” she said. “We’re having a lot more fun playing with each other, which I think is the most important part.”
Maddie Siegfried scored her first goal of the season at the 9:02 mark during a penalty corner. Her goal was assisted by Kendall Iasiello.
The second and third periods were uneventful as Northampton did not score and Muhlenberg did not generate a shot on goal.
At the 10:37 of the fourth quarter, Payton Huff notched her first goal of the season for the final score of the game. The assist went to Sydney Sugra.
Kadee Schrader saved all seven shots she shots faced, most of which occurred late in the final period when Northampton had pulled some of its starters.
EPC All-Star defender Taylor Kranzley watched the entire game from the sideline. She is suffering from Achilles tendinitis and as a precaution is being rested for some critical games at the end of the season.
With games against North Division teams Pleasant Valley and East Stroudsburg North on Thursday and Saturday respectively, the K-Kids figure to get to the 9 wins they need to assure themselves a spot in the district playoffs.
Qualifying for the EPC tournament will come down to their final two contests. Northampton, Stroudsburg, Liberty, and Whitehall are basically playing musical chairs for the final three spots. The K-Kids play at Liberty on Tuesday and host Whitehall next Thursday for Senior Night on the last day of the regular season.
