Kids roll to 5-0, but tough test awaits
The 5-0 Northampton football team stands alone as the last remaining undefeated EPC team after their 52-0 win over Allen last Friday at J Birney Crum Stadium.
Head coach John Toman had concerns over the team’s previous slow starts in road games, but none of that was in evidence in Allentown as the Kids scored on their first 6 possessions, held Allen to negative yardage in their first four possessions and added a pick six to boot.
“We came out firing on all cylinders and just took off from there,” Toman said. “I’m happy with everything we did tonight. I can’t complain, a goose egg defensively and they struggled to get a first down when the first unit was in there. We’re healthy, which was huge. We wanted to stay healthy and get ready for South.”
Once again, Caden Henritzy set the tone for the offense. A 20-yard gallop on 4th and 6 extended the K-Kids opening drive. He eventually powered over the goal line from a yard out for the first touchdown of the game.
From there on, a series of short fields and big plays kept the scoreboard operator busy throughout the first half.
Cooper King had four TD passes in his 6 passing attempts in the first half. The five completions totaled 122 yards, an average of over 24 yards per completion.
Victor Hunt had pair of interceptions, including his second pick six of the season. He added a 17-yard TD reception for good measure.
The other first half TD receptions were by Jaelen Richardson, 18 yards and Tristen Pinnock, 34 and 49 yards.
Jayden Huber hit Matt Druker for a 27-yard touchdown to cap the scoring in the fourth quarter.
Henritzy was the leading rusher with 41 yards on 6 carries. Jacob Dermott added 40 yards on 5 carries. Pinnock had a 23-yard run to give him over 100 yards from scrimmage for the game.
Northampton figures to have stiffer competition when they take on East Stroudsburg South at Al Erdosy Stadium on Friday. The Cavaliers are 4-1 on the season and on a 4-game winning streak after their 24-16 loss to Liberty on opening weekend. The only common opponent the teams have played so far this season is Allen. South beat the Canaries 47-12 in week two.
For the K-Kids, a win would essentially clinch their second EPC North Division title in three years. Their remaining divisional opponents, Pleasant Valley, Pocono Mountain East, and Dieruff should not pose much of a threat to their ambitions.
Toman certainly is not taking the Cavaliers lightly.
“They’re aggressive defensively,” he said. “Our offensive line is going to have to take steps forward to match that aggressiveness. Ron Blake, their tailback, is a big, physical runner and we’re going to have to keep him down and not let him get going. They do a lot special teams-wise, onside kicks, pop kicks, stuff like that we’re going to have to be ready for.”
