Hornets swarm T-wolves
The Emmaus Hornets used their superior athleticism and size to score six touchdowns in the first quarter en route to an 84-0 demolition of East Stroudsburg North last Friday night at ESHS North Stadium.
The Hornets improved to 3-1 in the league and overall on the season, while the Timberwolves dropped to 0-4.
“We went back to fundamentals, back to basics,” said Emmaus coach Harold Fairclough. “The kids handled this week very well.”
As to be expected in a lopsided affair, the Hornets were way too much football team for the Timberwolves.
Emmaus had athletes who were faster and stronger than nearly every single Timberwolf. The Hornets played disciplined football and executed Fairclough’s game plan almost perfectly. Crisp blocking, hard running and a solid tackling and defensive recognition of Timeberwolf plays proved the game’s storyline.
Six different Hornets - Jaiden Robinson, Jared Groller, Ben Thomas, Ryan DeJohn, Tyson Karrat and Sam Moratori - reached the end zone in the game’s first 12 minutes. Robinson opened the scoring when he caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josiah Williams. On this play Williams took the snap, took one step back and fired a bullet to his right to Robinson, who had two blockers in front to help navigate his way to the end zone.
After Groller carried the rock the two yards for a 14-0 lead, Thomas and DeJohn each returned interceptions for touchdowns as the onslaught was well underway.
Williams had two touchdowns passes on the evening, also hitting Karrat with a 26-yard for a score. Robinson scored another touchdown on a nifty 52-yard punt return and Karrat Running back Tylik Jarvis took it to the house on a 9-yard touchdown run.
The evening was also a memorable one for three other Hornets - sophomore running back Jasiyah Banks, freshman Reilly Bechtel and sophomore Jahkari Christian - each scored their first high school touchdowns.
“We made some plays in all three phases of the game,” Fairclough said.
The Emmaus defense swarmed the Timberwolves in earning its second season shutout.
EDITOR’S NOTE
In last week’s article about the Hornets’ win over Whitehall, one Emmaus touchdown scorer was incorrectly identified. Dylan Darville scored on a 19-yard pass in the second half of that game, but a different player was named in last week’s article.
