Anticipating that heavy rains associated with the remnants of Hurricane Ida Sept. 1 would probably be the cause of flash flooding, Salisbury police and firefighters take the proactive step of closing the Lehigh Street and 33rd Street S.W. intersection around 5:30 p.m. before drivers could be caught in rising waters. The intersection, the low point at the confluence of three downward-sloping major streets and the South Mall parking area, for decades has been the scene of motorists caught in flash flooding conditions and needing rescue by Western Salisbury Volunteer Fire Company, Eastern Salisbury and Emmaus fire department rescue crews. As the heaviest rains began rising in the intersection, fire and police and township public works barricades and fire police blockades were put in place to halt traffic along the busy highway and prevent motorists from entering the high waters that remained through the height of the storm's downpour.
