One path for Liberty’s golf team’s quest for an undefeated season was through Emmaus.
Heading into last week’s meeting, both teams had undefeated records and understood the importance of a few defeats meant for their chances at the postseason.
Liberty now has one less worry.
The defending district champion Hurricanes edged the Green Hornets, 387-384, at Bethlehem Municipal. Matt Vital led the Hurricanes with a four-under 67.
“That was a great match, and a great win for us,” beamed Liberty head coach Steve Bradley, whose team raised its mark to 11-0. “Three strokes, that’s it. It was a tight, good match but we pulled it out.”
Jimmy Barker shot a 75, Jase Barker fired a 78, and Matt Ronca netted a 79. Michael Vital followed with an 85.
Bradley has been impressed with the recent play of Matt Vital.
“He is as good as anyone,” said Bradley. “He has been playing very well. He had a one-under, three-under and four-under in his last three matches.
“He had all the tools, and he will be even better.”
The Hurricanes had another pivotal match against Nazareth Tuesday. Liberty will also have matches against Stroudsburg, and Parkland before they end the regular season against Freedom.
Bradley has some depth, but he realizes his younger players are still learning the game. He saw his team peak at the right time last year, and knows they have the same potential this fall.
“If we get by Nazareth, we would have a good chance to go undefeated,” added Bradley. “It will be difficult, as we have to play pretty consistent golf. We have the people to do that.
“I believe we can match up against anybody. We’re not as deep as we were last year, and we have four very good players. If everyone continues to play well, we can go far.”
