Patriots looking to earn more wins this season

Freedom’s girls tennis team, coached by Mark Sigmon, is hoping to extend its wins beyond last year’s in 2021.

Returning to number one singles is now senior Isabella Szmodis.

“She was number one last year and number two the year before that. She’s a nice player and a good number one player,” Coach Sigmon said. “I expect her to win 85 percent of her matches. If she plays to her capability, she should be a district semifinalist.”

Playing at two singles is Devon Ulmer and Navya Manne is playing at three singles.

Annika Katchur and Isabella Barberis have moved up to two doubles from number three doubles.

Playing at three doubles are Samantha Torok and Liyania Paiker.

At four doubles for the Pates are Katie Twiggar and Isabelle Burnett.

“Four doubles are playing pretty well,” said Sigmon. “I don’t mind us losing if we’re playing OK. We have to keep the ball in play. Last year was tough. We beat Northampton twice, and after that, we didn’t do very well.”
