LHS aims for another trip to states

What to do for an encore?

That’s the question the Liberty golf team faces this season after the Hurricanes had a historic season last year after they posted a second-place finish at the PIAA state tournament. Liberty fired a total of an 18-over-par 302 to tie Unionville behind champion Cathedral Prep.

This season, the Hurricanes could be back on the road toward another state tournament, as they have brought back the majority of their lineup. In fact, Liberty should be in the running for the following season as well without a senior among their top starting five players.

Yet, head coach Steve Bradley has tempered her expectations despite his team being undefeated in their first six matches this season.

“We’re not as deep as we were last year,” said Bradley. “We do have five good players. We have some new players in our program, and it really drops off right now after our first five players.

“But we have some players who are getting some really good experience right now. We have about nine players now who will have to be in a playoff to see who gets the remaining spots.”

Junior Jimmy Barker, and Matt and Mike Vital along with sophomores Jace Barker and Matt Ronca - a Freedom transfer - have comprised the Hurricanes’ lineup throughout the early part of the season.

Sophomore Chase Orinsky has been improving, and he likely will be on the radar.

“Our top five guys are solid,” noted Bradley. “We brought four guys back who helped us make the run last year, and they should have a good season.

“Chase Orinsky keeps getting better, and he has a real chance to crack the lineup.”

Bradley is optimistic that he could have some new faces in the lineup. He also realizes it may be difficult to capture some magic in a bottle.

“We have some good kids on JV, and they keep getting better,” he said. “We’re off to a good start, and we just had a tight match with (Allentown) Central Catholic. We have a lineup that we can have in place next year.

“We’re hitting the ball well, and we’ll take it match-by-match. I believe we can pick up the pace.”
