’Canes looking to change culture

It’s a new era of Liberty football with Shawn Daignault taking over the program this year and you can expect results to be different.

Coming off an 0-6 season a year ago, Daignault and his staff are in the process of changing the culture of a once power program that has fallen on hard times.

“There was a lot of mental learning going on as well as still adjusting to the new way of doing things here,” Daignault said. “We have a core group of kids that have bought in and will do anything we ask of them. Others are getting on board but there has been some attrition as well which was also expected.”

Returning starters for the Hurricanes this year are Sr. OL Anthony Sarkozy, Jr. WR/DB Karim Brice, Sr. DL Brennan McKeown, Sr. DL Dominic Colon, Sr. RB/LB Kyndred Wright, Sr. LB Keegan Corr, Sr. WR/LB Tyshawn Jack, Jr. and QB Tommy Mason.

Also in the fold as returning players include Sr. TE Jon Ahner and Sr. QB/DB Peyton Carson.

Carson and Mason are both fighting for the starting quarterback position, which is a good problem to have, as Daignault has two capable options under center.

Newcomers include Sr. RB Javon Lee, So. WR/DB Camron Ellis, Jr. WR/DB Nico Sciarra, Jr. WR/DB Anthony Askerneese, Sr. DL Niko Vazquez, Jr. TE/DL Matt Leonardo, Jr. OL/DL Jelanie Leslie and Jr. OL/DL Jordan Bartholomew.

“Our biggest key on offense will be the result of our QB battle and how the winner of that battle performs,” said Daignault. “Outside of that, developing some cohesion on an offensive line that will feature many new starters will be important. I am excited about our skill positions that I think will be talented and deep. Another key will be how well we learn a completely new system.”

“Like on offense, we will be completely revamping our defensive package we run, so learning that package is our biggest key on defense. We are moving some guys to new positions to fit that package as well. Developing depth in the front seven will be important but like on offense we feel very good about our depth in the skill positions.”
