Becahi girls aim to get back to finals

Will Bethlehem Catholic’s girls tennis team repeat as District XI Class 2A finalists?

“That would be nice,” said Becahi coach George Harmanos, “but I think there’s a lot of good competition this year. Central and Notre Dame Green Pond are going to be very good. Moravian Academy, obviously. They’re district champs. It’ll be nice if we get there, but it’s not going to be easy. I think AA will be very competitive.”

Cara Magliochetti is returning to the number one singles spot, and Taylor Adams is moving up to number two singles from number three for this year’s Golden Hawks.

Isabella Bautista, a former doubles player, is also moving up to singles in the number three spot.

“We did lose some excellent doubles players,” Harmanos said, “so we have a lot of work to do to be as strong as we were last year.”

Three returners, however, are being considered for two doubles: Patty Superka, Grace Hartman, and Maddie Lennert.

“I’m not sure exactly who I’m going to pair once we get into the season. I may switch things around for a couple of matches to see,” said Harmanos.

Ella Trunzo will be ready at three doubles, whether paired with Superka, Hartman, or Lennert.

Playing at four doubles are Claire Zaza and Ava Burkart.

“Claire was on j.v. last year and has worked hard and picked up her game,” Harmanos said. “Ava is a nice, athletic girl. She hasn’t played a lot of tennis but she’s learning, so she should be good.”

Like the rest of the East Penn Conference, Becahi is looking forward to playing outside of Northampton County, unlike last year when COVID-19 restrictions were in place.

“We were glad that we were playing and it could’ve been worse. They could have shut us down, so this will be a good thing,” Harmanos said.
