Girls tennis team starts season 3-0
The Salisbury girls tennis team had already begun its season when most fall high school sports were still more than a week from opening their regular seasons.
The Falcons got off to a 3-0 start as all of their singles players and doubles teams remained undefeated. All five wins were by 5-0 scores.
Salisbury beat Wilson and Pen Argyl in Colonial League competition and topped Tamaqua in a nonleague match.
First-year head coach Stan Fidrych said his team is “on a roll” as it looks to improve on last year’s performance in the Colonial League. Salisbury went 8-2 in league matches last season with the losses coming to undefeated Moravian Academy and Southern Lehigh (8-2 in 2020).
Salisbury was the No. 2 seed for the District 11 Class 2A playoffs last season and beat Jim Thorpe in the first round before falling to eventual district runner-up Bethlehem Catholic, 4-1 in the semifinals. Moravian Academy won last year’s 2A team title.
The Falcons graduated their top two singles players from last year’s team in Bryn Kubinsky and Paige Gibbons, along with doubles player Anna Bitar.
This year’s team has plenty of talent to fill those positions.
Senior Krista Bonge moves from a doubles position last year into the number one singles spot, while senior Mackenzie Hankee will play at No. 2 singles this season and sophomore Genesis Almodovar is the Falcons’ third singles player.
Senior Maisie Oliver and Marcie Silberman were both doubles players last year. This year they’ve teamed up as the Falcons No. 1 pairing, while with junior Angela Bitar, sophomore Mia Kezengwa and sophomore Addison Paulik have played at No. 2 doubles.
Other varsity players who could see action this season include sophomores Hailey Leayman and Maya Collier.
Fidrych cited “consistency of play, determination to win and team building” as this year’s team strengths.
Salisbury has matches this week against Kutztown (Aug. 30) and Moravian Academy (Aug. 31) and Saucon Valley (Sept. 2).
