At Hanover Township Council’s meeting Aug. 18, Manager Melissa Wehr presented information discussing how the township works with Han-Le-Co, the township’s volunteer fire company.
Wehr has assigned township staff and Han-Le-Co firefighters to revise and amend procedures. This is a standard process, necessary for any government and business, and needs to be done periodically.
The volunteers at the fire company are critical not only for the residential and business clients they serve, but also for the safety of Lehigh Valley International Airport, located in the township.
The township wants to forge effective methods and procedures with its volunteers and staff to move forward the stakeholders - the residents, utilities, safety forces and government services.
The township understands its responsibility. Through the decades, the township has provided the proper equipment and personnel to function. It recently approved a capital budget that affirms its continuing support for airport fire safety and the myriad of businesses that support fire services in the township.
Township officials believe the township provides the service effectively and with a low cost. The tax is less than 1 mill annually.
The difference between the services provided by the township and the firefighters is the township staff is paid and the volunteers earn no compensation. Firefighters do receive some benefits. No one questioned the firefighters’ commitment or the support from the township’s responsibility.
In other action, the paving at Postal Road was set to be finished by press time. This project has been years in the making and gives the township a firm foundation for future maintenance needs. The project builds the base needed for the increased truck traffic due to the expanded airport warehousing services.
