Summer art camps offer a variety of lessons

Press Photos by April Peterson The Baum School of Art offers annual summer art camps to students from 5 to 17 years old. Budding artists hone their art skills, such as drawing and painting, as well as gain knowledge of art theory, science and math in unexpected ways. ABOVE: Abigail Banser works on a mixed media project combining paper collage techniques and painting a zebra in profile.
ABOVE: Chase Pfaff works on a still life featuring skulls, gourds, wine bottles and fruits. Pfaff hoped to use the finished product in a portfolio to submit to Kutztown University's applied digital arts program.
Evan Bixler works on a watercolor project using dots of color and a paper towel to blot the paint. “I taught myself. It helps the watercolors dry faster,” Bixler said.
Instructor Jackie Rambo works with young artists on abstract paintings created with metallic paints and tape. Pandemic restrictions required small classes in which social distancing could be maintained.
Bria Edmonds is a student at The Baum School of Art during the recent summer camp session. Edmonds' artwork combines tape and metallic paints on canvas.
Alia Harrison enjoys doing art, especially drawing and painting and plans to become a doctor. Harrison's candy-themed illustrations of color theory is on her work table.

Instructor Alaura Ennis, right, helps older art students prepare portfolio worthy pieces, challenging them with a different project each day of the session. “They dive right in. It doesn't take them long to catch on to try a new medium. They come up with some pretty awesome stuff.”
Students tackle topics such as color theory, fractions, water resistance and how hardness of a pencil factors into drawing. RIGHT: Amara Harrison works on a mixed media project.
In addition to the art assignment, Jessica Jin also works on a pop-up sketch book of her experiences at art summer camp at The Baum School of Art.
