Gloria J. Kravetz
Gloria J. Kravetz died peacefully July 23, 2021, at her residence in Burlington, Vt.
She celebrated her 87th birthday on July 12.
Born in Slatington, she was a daughter of the late Velma (Heil) Roth and Lawrence Engle.
She was raised by her paternal grandparents, the late Henry and Katie Engle.
She was a member of St. John’s UCC, Slatington, where she enjoyed singing with the choir.
Her survivors include son David, of Allentown; daughter Amy and son-in-law Michael Saunders of Westford, Vt.; sister Cheryl (Roth) Weiner; maternal cousin Sharon (Handwerk) and husband Gene Hardenberg; and nephews and nieces Lee (Isabel) Engle, Jill Engle, Jeff (Lynn) Reitz, Ted Engle, Seth (Heather) Reitz, Erik (Kelly) Weiner, Benjamin (Brooke) Reitz; grandnieces and grandnephews; and one great-grandniece.
A 1952 graduate of Slatington High School, she then was office manager at Prudential, Allentown, retiring to focus solely on her business.
For 62 years, she and her husband were the proprietors of the original Berlinsville Hotel.
They were famous for their cheesesteaks, reasonable prices and running a tight ship.
Their place was a local favorite and allowed her to stay abreast of the comings and goings in Lehigh Township.
She amazed customers and friends by remembering not only their order but also the details of their lives.
After her husband died, she lived with her son, David, for a few years before moving to Vermont to be closer to her daughter, Amy.
She loved singing and music, and throwing a good party.
She was always thoughtful, generous, kind and caring to her family and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Michael; brother Leo Engle; sister Ann Marie (Engle) Reitz; sister-in-law Phyllis (Hughes) Engle; and brother-in-law Thomas Weiner.
A memorial service will be held Aug. 21, at St. John’s UCC, 15 2nd St., Slatington.
The family will receive guests starting at 10 a.m. Service at 11 a.m. Pastor James LeVan will be officiating, assisted by Pastor Henry A. Distler Jr. Luncheon will follow. Internment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John’s UCC Music Ministry, 15 2nd St., Slatington, PA 18080, or to a charity of one’s choice.
