Construction delays could push back home openers

Catasauqua is ready to unveil a new field this fall, but it likely will need to wait a little longer for its christening.

Rough Riders athletic director Tom Moll stated some unexpected delays have halted the progress of their new field and stadium.

“Construction is behind a little,” he said. “We are still not sure of a completion date, but we should know in a few weeks.

“There won’t be any structural changes. In the process, the builders have hit a lot of rock during excavation. We have started the process of looking for alternative locations for our early season home games if necessary.”

Possible local sites could be Whitehall or Northampton. The Roughies, who will begin play in the newly formed Colonial/ Schuylkill League this fall, are scheduled to open the regular season at Salisbury Aug. 27, and they then travel to Pen Argyl Sept. 4.

Their first home game is scheduled for Sept. 10 against Marian, and then they will travel to Panther Valley Sept. 17 before their next home game Sept. 24 against Palmerton.

There have been indications that the Roughies’ first home game on their new field will be in October. During that month, they have home games scheduled for Oct. 1 (Mahanoy), Oct. 15 (Pine Grove), and Oct. 22 (Schuylkill Haven).

Moll indicated the approximate capacity for the field will be 3,500, and it will feature football, field hockey and soccer. A new press box, scoreboard, goal posts, and interior and exterior fencing will fall into place. A turf instead of a grass field earlier was improved due to its longevity and the amount of volume due to the multiple teams utilizing the field.

He added that the field house also will be renovated, creating a new coaches room, training room, and locker rooms. The visiting bleachers may be smaller than the older version, and new lighting will provide a brighter perspective.

One of the other major additions will be a brown turf track that finally will provide the program with home meets.

Other improvements will include a new ticket booth, gate replacement, sound system, parking, and paving improvements.

Moll added that the field behind the scoreboard will be a practice field for the varsity and middle school team as well as a plot of land available for the track team.
