To the Editor:

I am writing in regard to the recent controversy about a donation of reading materials in the Northampton Area School District. The books, donated by The Conscious Kid, were reviewed and endorsed by the district’s professional staff. I was disappointed to see the school board did not accept the donation but tabled it, due to a complaint by a small group of uninformed citizens.

The district’s mission statement is “Northampton Area School District is dedicated to educating and developing responsible citizens who learn from the past, listen to the present and lead our future.”

I believe the group of protesters suggests that we glorify the past, ignore the present and fear the future.

We are living in an increasingly diverse society, and it is important to provide all students with appropriate resources.

I urge the school board to approve the donation at its next meeting.
