The annual Slovenian flag-raising ceremony took place June 25 at Payrow Plaza, celebrating both the 30th anniversary of Slovenia’s independence and the 25th anniversary of the Bethlehem/Murska Sobota Sister Cities Association (B/MSSCA). B/MSSCA. President Jonathan Rice and Vice President Eugene Novak represented the B/MSSCA, with Novak acting as emcee. The American and Slovenian flags were raised by Liliana Brockway and B/MSSCA founder Stephen Antalics Jr. Frank Podleiszek and Betty Sylva sang both National Anthems, with Alex Gergar on accordion. Slovenian Ambassador Tone Kajzer and Consul General Alenka Jerak attended and delivered speeches reflecting on accomplishment, hope and congratulations. On behalf of Mayor Robert Donchez, chief of staff Alexander Karras delivered a proclamation, and Northampton County Executive Lamont McClure also attended and spoke. The annual ceremony concluded with the singing of “God Bless America” near the B/MSSCA monument in the nearby library garden.

Slovenian Ambassador Tone Kajzer addresses the assembly: “We have developed alliances and partnerships...we can proudly look into the future.” He was appointed in December 2020.
