North Catty traffic stop nets explosives

A Northampton man has been charged with numerous offenses after a traffic stop in North Catasauqua led to a discovery of explosives in his vehicle.

According to a report released by Police Chief Christopher Wolfer, North Catasauqua police officers conducted a traffic stop approximately 4:30 a.m. July 18 after a red Ford F-350 failed to stop at a stop sign. During the traffic stop, officers determined the driver, Danny Berou, 32, of Northampton, to be impaired “to such a degree that he could not operate the vehicle safely.”

Officers requested a search warrant based on observations made during an initial investigation at the traffic stop.

The search warrant was granted, after which police discovered multiple M-type explosive devices in the passenger compartment of Berou’s vehicle. Mutual aid assistance from Allentown Bomb Squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was then requested.

M-type devices, such as M-80s, M-100s, M-250s and M-1000s, are classified as illegal explosive devises by ATF. They are not the same as fireworks, and possessing them is a felony in Pennsylvania.

Another search warrant was executed, with the help of Northampton Borough Police Department and the Allentown Bomb Squad, July 23 at Berou’s home in the 100 block of West 27th Street, Northampton. Investigators discovered multiple explosive devices as well as a narcotics manufacturing operation.

Berou has been charged with the following offenses: weapons of mass destruction, three counts; carrying explosives on conveyances; prohibited offensive weapons, three counts; possession of narcotics with intent to deliver; possession of a small amount of marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia, two counts; driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance; illegally operating a motor vehicle not equipped with ignition interlock while under the influence; and a stop sign violation.

According to the Northampton County Court of Common Pleas docket, Berou was arraigned July 29 before Magisterial District Judge Robert A. Hawke. Bail, originally set at $100,000 but reduced to $50,000, was posted that same day.

The investigation is continuing.
