Fireworks canceled for Das Awkscht Fescht

During the July 19 Macungie Borough Council meeting, Heather Printz, a resident of Macungie expressed concern over the cancellation of fireworks for the annual event held Aug. 6-8.

A group has organized to collect the necessary funds to reinstate the fireworks which will cost $7,500. Printz said the fireworks are a big part of the festival. To eliminate yet another event from this festival causes loss of attendance which ultimately causes loss of revenue.

A GoFundMe account has been established (in gofundme.com search for Das Awkscht Fescht) or funds can be dropped off at Young & Young, 119 E. Main St.

A resident expressed continuing concern over the costs of the pedestrian bridge on Cotton Street. An explanation of the costs has been sought.

A resident complained about the lack of flags on Main Street. Council will check with the public works department.

A complaint was received about pedestrians crossing Main Street (Route 100). Motorists are not stopping to allow this to happen. Macungie police are lacking manpower to enforce this.

A resident expressed concern over motorists not stopping at stop signs on Race Street. Residents were advised to report these to the police.

The Macungie Institute status is still in question. Getting the Macungie Institute open will aid in generating revenue for the borough. An answer is needed by the board of trustees. If to be opened or not to be opened, it would help the trustees to know how to move forward.

Interim Borough Manager John Brown said the subscription to Zoom is being canceled.

The Cotton Street Rain Garden is still under investigation. There will be a meeting with the Department of Environmental Protection and the engineer involved with the project to determine if this project is completed as stated and can then be certified.
