Northwestern graduate earns Eagle Scout Award

Rhys Matthew Fenstermaker, 19, of New Tripoli, received the highest rank in Scouting, the Eagle Scout Award as a member of Troop 66, Slatington, at an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony June 18 at the New Tripoli Fire Company.

The ceremony took place one year to the day (delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic) after Fenstermaker passed his Eagle Board of Review June 18, 2020, when he officially became an Eagle Scout.

State Rep. Gary Day, R-187th, spoke at the ceremony and presented Fenstermaker with a citation from the state House of Representatives.

Also in attendance was Ellen Kern, chief of staff, for state Sen. Patrick Browne, R-16th, who presented Fenstermaker with a citation from the State Senate.

Fenstermaker joined Pack 66 as a Webelo where he earned his Arrow of Light award, the highest rank in Cub Scouts.

He joined Troop 66 as a Boy Scout in 2014 where he was senior patrol leader and troop guide.

He is a member of the Order of the Arrow and earned a total of 33 merit badges.

For his Eagle Project, Fenstermaker installed emergency trail markers along the four-mile hiking trail at Leaser Lake.

He placed eight signs containing Emergency Response Location numbers along the trail every half mile.

These signs allow emergency responders to quickly locate injured hikers.

The ERL numbers are registered and in use with Lehigh County 911.

Fenstermaker, the son of Robert and Anouré Fenstermaker, is a 2020 graduate of Northwestern Lehigh High School.

He attends Lehigh Carbon Community College in the engineering program and plans to continue his studies in electrical/mechanical engineering at Penn State University.

Troop 66 of Slatington is sponsored by Allen O. Delke, Post 16 of the American Legion.

It is the second oldest troop in the Lehigh Valley having been continuously chartered since 1924.

The troop meets at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at the Scout House behind Victory Park, Slatington.

Robert M. Fenstermaker is the Scoutmaster.

Anyone interested in joining Boy Scouts is invited to stop by during any Tuesday night meeting.
