Amazing animals

East Allen Township summer campers were treated to an animal presentation June 25 by Haley D’Agostino, with Wildlands Conservancy.

More than 100 campers sat enthralled with D’Agostino’s presentation. Boxie the box turtle, Bartram the screech owl and Thistle the skunk were the stars of the show.

Boxie is about 30 years old, based on markings on his shell. It was noted his red eyes signify he is a male. His life expectancy is about 100 years. Box turtles are a near-endangered species, noted D’Agostino.

Bartram the screech owl is the second smallest type of owl found in Pennsylvania. Bartram was hit by a car and nurtured back to health by the conservancy. He is also vision impaired. What appears to be ears on top of his head are actually called plumicorns that he can puff up to help defray predators.

Thistle the skunk was described as being “sassy” and not wanting to be handled. Of course, Thistle is descented. If not, there might have been some unhappy parents when they picked up their kids at the end of the day.

Both the kids and the animals were well behaved throughout the presentation.

The camp is run by Chuck Frantz, camp director, and head counselors Rachel Frackenthall and Lauren Lalik. Frantz noted 130 kids signed up for the camp.

“The kids are having a lot of fun,” Frantz said.
