Bethlehem painter wins Top Job award
Ryan Amato Painting won a 2021 Top Job award from American Painting Contractor Magazine for their work refinishing a historic canal boat in Easton. The award is given to some of the best painting contractors in the United States, and Ryan Amato Painting was deeply honored to receive this recognition.
Restoring a 48-ton canal boat is not an easy feat, which is why Ryan Amato Painting was chosen for the job. Built in 1993, the hull of the boat was the last steel hull manufactured at Bethlehem Steel’s Sparrows Point plant and can seat 100 people. The boat offers its voyagers onboard dining and dazzling views of Lehigh Valley, which is why it was important to the community to keep it in good working condition. Amato’s expertise was needed to restore the steel structure for the future enjoyment of the craft by the community.
Not only was the job itself difficult, but the coordination around getting the job done was also arduous. The canal had to be drained and the boat placed on concrete blocks in order to be painted. Powerwashing and grinders were also needed to prep the boat for its new paint. When the 48-ton voyager was ready to be painted, only the best coating system was considered for the job. “We used the Rust-Oleum 9100 DTM Epoxy Mastic as a primer and implemented the Rust-Oleum 9800 DTM Urethane Mastic for a great coatings system,” said Amato. The canal also had to be refilled so the boat could be repositioned in order to paint the sections that were resting on the bricks. Once repositioned, the canal was drained again and the final paint applied.
