Fighting Hunger: Summer feeding program to begin
BY SHARI NOCTOR
Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative president
Our brand-new Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative children summer feeding program will begin June 16 and run 10-11 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday through Aug. 25. WCHI will provide a drop-and-go bag of dry food for each child in the Whitehall/Coplay household, toddlers through age 18, while food supplies last.
Whitehall-Coplay School District is graciously helping us inform student households by labeling a mailing provided by WCHI. Household information is private, and we greatly appreciate the district ensuring these households are aware of our program. Inside these envelopes are the location sites and information on our program.
Also included, from our recently approved Lehigh County Community Development Block Grant/CARES Act, is a survey form about 2021 income limits. This is a required form, and the household parent/guardian must check off the number of people living in the household and the corresponding household income limit.
The student’s parent/guardian must sign this form for us to distribute food. WCHI volunteers can help fill out this form, but the parent must sign it. If the parent/guardian is working during our distribution, the child - if allowed to leave the house - can bring the signed form to us.
Also in the mailer is the program’s registration form and information on our food pantry. Although households recently received P-EBT funds on their Access cards, we encourage residents to come to both the children’s feeding program and the food pantry.
We must see a valid driver’s license or a utility bill with the parent/guardian’s name and Whitehall/Coplay address. This is only required the first day we register the household. After the household is registered, the parent/guardian or children may pick up the bag(s) of food.
WCHI has six distribution sites for the summer feeding program: Redeemed Christian Church of God, 5 N. Third St., Coplay; the Maryland Circle school bus stop, Whitehall; the Mickley Run Apartment parking lot by building 350 off Overlook Road, Whitehall; Egypt Community Church social hall parking lot, Park and Church streets, Whitehall; St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 835 N. Third St., Whitehall; and the Third and Leisenring streets school bus stop, Whitehall.
