WCSD students bake for charity

Whitehall High School Student Council hosted a virtual Zoom bake-off contest for the school’s Mini-THON event, this year held April 24.

Each year, the school holds an event to raise money to help end childhood cancer. This year’s sweet virtual event had contestants pre-bake a cake or cupcake. They then had 30 minutes to decorate their dessert based on the theme of Olympics.

The guest judges - Mrs. Abbadessa, Mrs. Burnett, Mr. Brosky and Mr. Lynn - picked the winners, and the top three decorators won prizes. Olivia Mrazik was named the first-place winner, with Clara Baus and Jalyn Jimenez winning second and third, respectively.

Clara is a 6-year-old student who participated with the older students and featured different Olympic activities on her cake.

Contestants were provided a baking starter kit but were welcome to supply their own additional decorations. It was $5 to enter the contest.

Mrs. Le coordinated the Zoom meeting and worked with the Student Council members to set up the event.

Whitehall-Coplay School District PTO-PLUS President Toni Fillman helped to host the event and got to talk with the students a bit while the judges were deliberating.

“This was amazing,” Fillman said.

She noted how wonderful it was the teachers gave up their Saturday afternoon to help with and judge this event.
